The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes Review (PS5)

The newest entry in The Dark House series: House of Ashes is a somewhat great thriller but a times not so great. The overall experience felt rushed, but that's part of the appeal. The game played more like a movie, which was great to a point, but also a downside. This is what I call a "Super Cinematic" rather than a "Super Narrative" the difference being, a Super Cinematic is when the game is mainly cut-scenes you sit and watch whereas a Super Narrative is mostly making decisions while playing the game. It's this game vs. Wolf Among Us. I felt as though 80% of the time, I was just watching the story rather than playing the game. Which leaves the matter of that being good thing, completely up to the player. I was hoping for more of an Until Dawn experience, but this one leaned more on the side of showing a movie than a game. It was still enjoyable if you can get passed the weird character mannerisms and the nonsensical decision outcomes. I honestly feel like this was a few steps behind Until Dawn, which is sad because that game came out 6 years ago. Visually, and everything. House of Ashes is definitely worth at least one playthrough, but I don't see myself playing again.
(Luckily everyone survived my first playthrough)
